What happened

On February 17, 2026, AIS launched its new Real Talk series with "Beyond the Hustle", an unfiltered fireside chat with Jim Marsden, Executive Coach, Master Wilderness Guide, and Theory U Practitioner. The session was moderated by Prof. João Barros, Associate Director and Research Professor at Carnegie Mellon University.

Why "Real Talk"

The series was created as a deliberate counterweight to the conventional entrepreneurship narrative. Less polished pitch theatre. More honest conversation about what it takes to build well, and stay whole while doing it.

What was discussed

  • A critique of "hustle culture" as the default narrative for young African founders
  • More sustainable, purposeful, human-centered approaches to leadership
  • Insights from Marsden's unusual blend of executive coaching, wilderness leadership, and presencing theory
  • Prof. Barros's grounding of those ideas in the realities of building tech ventures in African contexts

Why it resonated

Together, the two speakers created the kind of reflective dialogue that's rare in business education, and exactly the kind of programming AIS wants to keep delivering through Real Talk.
